No cure, but better meds for common cold

A possible breakthrough in fighting the common cold. Researchers at U-W Madison have constructed a model of rhinovirus C, which can cause severe colds .

Biochemistry professor Ann Palmenberg says the model shows how rhinovirus C differs from rhinoviruses A and B.

Together the three viruses cause some 85 percent of common colds, but so far drug trials targeting them have met with limited success.

Rhinovirus C tends to cause severe colds deep in the lungs.
